Congrats to our winners, participants, and alternates (4A: Captain Antonio Mayo Mariscal, Rylin Billie-Osceola, and Felicia Buck 4B: Captain Emma Delgado, Maria Camila Leal Mendoza, and Jack Simmonds 4C: Captain Nicolas Ricco, Sofia Nouel-Mato, and Annie Schulze) (Alternates: Nicolas Caicedo, Emiliana Gonzalez, Gabriel Lavado, Zara Rivero, Jayden Reid, and Jordan Shenassa).

Werner Weinstock

The fourth and fifth grade students were fortunate today to have holocaust survivor and liberator Werner Weinstock speak to them about his experience in WWII. The hour-long presentation took students on a journey from his life in Berlin in the 1930s He escaped worn-torn Germany with his mother, father, and brother to Havana, Cuba. His family was eventually welcomed into the United States. Once in the United States, Mr. Weinstock joined the United States Army and fought in WWII in Japan. Later, he was in Germany as part of the denazification process.  His experiences were captivating for the students and teachers alike. We are incredibly thankful that we have the opportunity to learn his lessons so something like this will never happen again.

Searching for Sea Creatures

Our students got an exciting opportunity to discover sea life of all shapes and sizes at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center. Equipped with large nets, the fourth grades waded through seagrass beds. They dragged the nets along the bottom for 10 seconds and then brought up a plethora of different sea creatures such as puffer fish, parrot fish, sea urchins, crabs, lobsters, and shrimp. Our guides helped to identify each creature and then reserved the finds for later. After thirty minutes of dragging the nets, they got to learn a little more about what they found. The guides described each species in detail and passed the sea life around so they could examine interesting features of each one like the male pike fish carrying eggs, the decorator crab decorating his shell with the sea sponge, and the tube feet and spines of the sea urchin. After each species was examined, they were released gently back to their homes. This rich ecosystem proved to be a rewarding learning experience for our fourth graders.

I Am Woman, Hear Me ROAR!!!

March is National Women’s Month. The fourth grade students celebrated women by reading a biography about an influential woman, past and present, who contributed positively to society. Once the biography was read, the students got busy putting together a presentation to teach their classmates all about their influential woman. We had videos, book advertisements, puppet shows, and becoming the character.  We all learned a tremendous amount about these women’s roles in the making of history!

#SagemontIsSuperFun

Super Sagemont Week is a great way for kids to get a little goofy while showing their school spirit. Each day, the kids had a theme for dressing up, and we finished the week with Super Sagemont Day. Monday was #SagemontsMarchMadnessSportFanDay. Students got an opportunity to wear their favorite sports jersey. Tuesday brought #SagemontsThrowBackTimeWarp where the students dressed up in clothes from their favorite decade. On Wednesday it was #SagemontsSuperHeroes with the students representing their favorite super hero. The week was finished with #SuperSagemontDay. Our students dressed in gold to represent the fourth grade.
Super Sagemont Day was new and exciting with the students spending the day at Weston Regional Park. They got to participate in many fun games and activities. We think that Super Sagemont Week was #SuperFun
