Our First Book Buddies

On Friday afternoon, the students got to meet their book buddies. Throughout the year, the fourth grade will visit Preschool and Pre-K to do fun crafts, read, and share time with our new friends. For our first book buddies, the students completed a cute Halloween frame, shared a snack, and had fun reading time together.  The fourth graders definitely felt like big kids on campus being able to mentor our smallest friends. Anti-Bullying Through the Arts

Today the students got to participate in an Anti-bullying Through the Arts campaign.  The organization, the Humanity Project, taught the kids unique ways to “solve pressing social problems through collaborative efforts that emphasize the value of each individual.” They saw an anti-bullying skit, heard songs, and participated in the telling of stories.

We now know bullying hurts everyone in school and it takes everyone to stop it." No Bully!!!

Crime Scene Detectives

Students in 4th grade reading got the opportunity to become detectives in The Book Ending Mystery. Someone tore the endings and took out the labels from Mrs. Summermatter’s books. They also stole her binder so no one could check out books. Oh no! Who would do such a thing?

Monday, the students entered the classroom to find that Mrs. Summermatter’s classroom was turned into a crime scene, complete with caution tape, clues, and a giant who-done-it mystery.

Each student received a packet with a Detective’s Dictionary, case description, and case file. They also found alibis from Mrs. Vigna, Mrs. Valdes, Ms. Fiet, and Monty Lion (who were all reportedly at the scene of the crime around the time of the incident).

Each student sketched the crime scene and highlighted incriminating evidence in the alibis.

They formed their opinions about the real criminal in the case.

After sorting through all of the red herrings, students found a missed clue. It turned out to be Mrs. Padron who had left a riddle at the scene of the crime. Apparently she wanted the kids to read mystery books as part of the school-wide AR challenge for October. After confessing, Mrs. Padron received 3-5 years of hard labor as the media specialist. Case closed on this mystery J

A Cultural Exchange

This week is an exciting week for our fourth grade students, as they have an opportunity to share their American culture and learn some about the Chinese culture. We have six students visiting from the Haibin School in Shenzhen, China. They will be experiencing a week in the life of a Sagemont fourth grade student. We lovingly welcome David, James, Helen, Bob, John, and Rainny to our fourth grade family. J

Celebrating America

On Friday, the students celebrated America, with their fourth grade performance. Each child learned a fact that was related to America’s independence, history of war, immigration, geography, landmarks, and holidays. The students danced to Firework by Katy Perry, Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, Pa Pa Americano by Yolanda Be Cool, Surfin’ USA by The Beach Boys, Back in the USA by Linda Ronstadt, and R.O.C.K. in the USA by John Mellencamp. They did a great job!

The Honorable Judge Stacey Schulman

Friday was all about the election process in fourth grade. The students were fortunate enough to have the Honorable Judge Stacey Schulman teach them all about voting, the primary and general elections, the importance of voting, items on a ballot, campaigning, endorsements, a judge’s role and job description, the difference between an elected and appointed judge, and a day in the life of a judge. She was able to share all about her experience in getting elected as a judge in Broward County.

After the presentation, each student got an opportunity to dress in the judge's official robe and pose with her gavel.  They enjoyed the power so much that we may have a few future judges!

The students also got to make a “Get Out and Vote” poster to encourage others to exercise their civic duty, because they learned how important every vote can be in an election.

We could not be more thankful for the opportunity to learn from such an influential and exceptional person. Thanks for such an amazing learning experience Judge Schulman! J
